by Amanda Hull
The symposium-workshop, “Community Management of wildlife in Latin America: SULi strategy – IUCN and Impacts of COVID 19” was held on 11 November 2021 in the framework of “International Congress on the Management of Wild Fauna of the Amazon and Latin America”. This event was organized by SULi Latin-American members and focused on Latin American perspectives, an exploration of community wildlife management, and how this is achieved in Latin America, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the event, eleven experts, including wildlife management representatives from Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico, delivered presentations detailing their experiences with sustainable use and how sustainable management strategies have enabled benefits, both in terms of improved livelihoods and biodiversity conservation. Additionally, representatives from eight local communities in Costa Rica, Brazil, and Peru talked and shared their experiences, also making suggestions for the further development of wildlife management and biodiversity conservation policy.
For SULi, the outcomes of the event represent an important contribution to ongoing strategy development.
A formal report will be published and made available online in March 2022.
